A selection of work that has shaped how I think about design

and what I've learnt from it

Lessons from Making, breaking and fixing things

01.

Good design can change the world.

But most days, it just makes someone's Tuesday suck a little less - and that matters just as much.

02.

Sweat the small stuff.

Because users do. That 2px misalignment? They might not consciously notice it, but they'll feel it. Excellence is built one detail at a time.

03.

Your best design work will get killed.

And that's fine. You're not making art for a gallery, you're solving problems with constraints. Ego is expensive.

04.

Fast doesn’t always mean forward.

Real progress is thoughtful problem-solving, meaningful iteration and decisions that hold up over time.

05.

Not all data looks the same.

Sometimes the user pain is obvious. Empathy and observation are just as legitimate as analytics - act on it, even if it isn't on the roadmap yet.

06.

Date your ideas, don't marry them.

Your first solution is rarely your best one. Be flexible, adapt often and let better solutions win - even if they're not yours.

07.

Constraints aren’t blockers.

They are design inputs. Time, tech, org structure - learning to work with them is part of the craft.

08.

Good design knows when to say “no.”

Not every feature request deserves a solution. Know when to protect the experience by pushing back on scope creep, dark patterns and things that can make the product bad.

09.

Learning is the job.

Five years in, I sometimes still google the basics, figure things out as I go and learn constantly. And that’s how it’s supposed to work.
